How To Find A Reliable And Affordable Moving Company

Moving from one household to another can be pretty stressful and overwhelming. Unless you’re moving down the street and your belongings can fit into a single truck, you’ll probably need more than a few burly buddies to help you out. Unless that’s the case, you’re going to need a professional moving company to assist you during the move.

Finding the right company can be tricky. There a lot of them. Making a wrong decision could cost you a lot and you wouldn’t want that. But, with so many to choose from, how can you be certain that you’re choosing the right company? Well, if that’s what’s troubling you, we’ve devised a guide that can help you check all the important boxes and make a sound decision based off of it. Let’s get started.

Check How Experienced The Company Is

One of the best ways to ensure the best service possible is to check for how long has the company been around. The basic premise is, if they’ve been around for long, they must be doing something right. Right?

Well, something along those lines. It’s good to find an experienced company because chances are, they’ve done it all already. They have the necessary knowledge to deal with any situation they may end up with. This is especially useful when it comes to out-of-state moving considering the logistics of the whole thing.

Look For Insured Companies

If you want to minimize or eliminate the risks to your belongings, the best way to do so is to look for a properly licenced and insured company. That way, if anything happens, you’ll be compensated for the damage to your belongings. This should apply to everything from scratched and damaged goods to lost belongings. If you’re not sure whether the company you’re considering is insured or not, check their website. Information in regards to this should be somewhere in the About Us section, if not, ask directly. You are allowed to know whether the company has DOT licensing or insurance.

Check Online Ratings And Reviews

In most cases, you can learn a lot about any company from the previous experiences of their customers. The same thing applies here. If you’ve found a company or two you’re interested in, it’s advised to check the ratings and reviews on Google or Facebook. Ideally, you’re looking for a company with a 4.5 (out of five) average rating. Now, reviews can be a little tricky. Ideally, you’ll read about a dozen of them and then decide. Don’t get stuck on 1 star or 5-star reviews as they could easily be biased. Unless there’s an abundance of them, then they certainly mean something.

Ask What Services They Offer

Knowing which services the company offers could be very important. The vast majority of the companies is more than capable of delivering satisfactory service on a simple house-to-house, in-town moving, but for something slightly more detailed or complicated – you should always check. You may have some uncommon things that need to be moved and the company could lack the equipment or the manpower to do so. Things like large safes, hot tubs, pianos, large closets etc. aren’t as easy to transport, so you should discuss those things beforehand. You could also inquire about additional services, like storage, which companies like Matco Moving, for instance, offer.

Ask For An In-Home Survey

You should’ve narrowed your choices by now, so the next thing would be to ask for an in-home survey. Unless you don’t have a lot of items and you’re sure it should be an easy move, the right thing to do is to ask for a company representative to come in and take a look at what needs to be moved, so you can move on to the next step.

Ask For A Detailed Cost Estimate

Moving costs vary, which is obvious, considering how many moving parts there are. They may vary based on the number of things, the distance, additional services, special items that need to be transferred, the number of people on the job and so forth. That’s why you should insist on a detailed cost estimate before proceeding with the move. Once the representative has been introduced with everything, they should be able to easily calculate the costs and present you with a very accurate and detailed cost estimate. If the company refuses to do so, it might be best to walk out.

Find Out About The Service Area

In retrospect, this should’ve been higher up the list, considering none of the previous ones matter unless the company is operating in your area, but, we’re not ranking the tips so it’s not that big of a deal. In most cases, this should be easy to check, as many companies will have this information on their website, usually in a form of a map with clear boundaries inside which they operate and offer their services. If there isn’t any information regarding this on the website, you should call and ask directly, as this is a deal-breaker.

Ask About Their Equipment

This shouldn’t come up if the company does an in-home survey as they’ll know if they can or cannot perform a certain task, but, if they’re unable too, it’s best to ask about the equipment they’re working with.  For instance, maybe you need to move out of an apartment and the piano you’re moving needs to be lowered by crane from the 5th floor. If the company doesn’t have a crane, you may have to rent that one out yourself or find a company that’ll do it for you.

Best way to find an affordable, yet reliable mover is to find a reliable one first and negotiate the price afterwards. The thing is, quality should always come first. If there’s a way to lower the cost, through an early booking discount or something similar – great. Another thing is, reliable companies are often more affordable than you might think. Either way, it doesn’t cost anything to try and get a discount. Just don’t sacrifice reliability and quality of service to save a few bucks – it could easily turn out to be more expensive.

There you have it. In our humble opinion, if you follow this simple guide, you will probably find the perfect company for you. Hopefully, it’s been helpful.
