Even though Hollywood produces some of the best movies in the world, we cannot hide the fact that international movies are bold, different, and definitely worth watching. In this article, we are going to give you a list of the best foreign films in 2021, and along with the short plot, we will try to give you some reasons why you should sit down, and give these amazing pieces a chance.
1. And Then We Danced
The first movie we are going to talk about is a drama and romance that first premiered in February this year. It is a Georgian film and the writer and director behind it is Levan Akin. The reason why we chose it as number one on this list is because of the amazing rating it has, as well as the perfect and captivating story. On IMDB you can see that it has a rating of 7.8 and on Rotten Tomatoes it has a 93% score.
The story is about love, but it is also about the taboo and how people are faced with the unknown when they fall in love with someone they are not supposed to. In the lead role, we can see Levan Gelbakhiani, who plays a great dancer who has a bright future ahead of him. Things turn sideways when he is introduced to another dancer, played by Bachi Valishvili. They are supposed to be rivals, and each other’s greatest competitor, but instead they fall in love in a society that does not approve of same-sex love. Give this movie a chance, and learn more about the struggles and the passion these two dancers go through when faced with the hard choices in life.
2. Corpus Christi
Probably the highest-rated film on our list, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 97% and an IMDB rating of 7.7. The original title of this film is Boze Cialo and it is a Polish movie originating in Poland and France. It is already nominated for one Oscar, and the critics say that this is the number one film to follow. The writer is Mateusz Pacewicz, and the director behind the film is Jan Komasa.
This piece is rated as drama, but it is much more than that. Here you can see the former priest who tries to help a sinner who wants to be redeemed from his sins. It is said that this film portrays the unorthodox believer and the stigma behind it. The leading roles are played by Bartosz Bielenia and Aleksandra Konieczna.
3. Beanpole
Now let’s go to Russia and explore this beautiful, but a stressful drama about the war. The movie was directed by Kantemir Balagov and it was written by the director as well as Aleksandr Terekhov. This masterpiece has an amazing rating of 7.1 on IMDB, and it is still growing. On Rotten Tomatoes it has a 91% score, and the overall Metascore is 84. So, if you want to rely on other people’s opinions about something, then you should trust the critics, users, and us that this is something worth watching.
As The Vore explains, the story is set in Leningrad, soon after World War II ended, and the people are trying to rebuild a life that is already challenging and difficult. The leading roles are Viktoria Miroshnichenko and Vasilisa Perelygina, two former female soldiers that are trying to continue their lives working as nurses. Watch this masterpiece to learn more about life, struggles, and how people are open to doing anything they can just to provide a better future for the new generations.
4. Deerskin
For our next film, we are taking you to France. The original title is Le Daim, and it falls under the horror-comedy genre. The writer and director behind this piece is Quentin Dupieux, and the leading roles are the award-winning Jean Dujardin, as well as Adèle Haenel.
This is called an absurd story, and it follows the main character as he obsesses over his jacket made of deerskin. Because of this piece, he wastes all of his life savings, and he turns to crime, just to be able to persuade a film editor to make a movie out of his story. It is definitely an interesting thing to see, and you will be surprised by the human mind and the lengths we are willing to walk just to make our desires happen.
5. I’m No Longer Here
The last piece we are going to talk about originates from Mexico, and it is a film both in Spanish and English. Currently, it has an amazing rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 7.3 on IMDB. It already won 15 different awards, and it was nominated for 5 additional ones. It falls under the drama genre and Fernando Frias is the writer and director of this piece.
The storyline follows a teen gang located in Mexico and the ways they pass their days. One of their favorite pastimes is the slow dance called “cumbia rebajada”. Here you won’t see only the present of the leading role’s life, but you will also be introduced to the past, and the struggles an immigrant goes through when living in New York City. It is definitely interesting, but a difficult movie, and you need to be prepared to feel both the good and the bad things that happen to the characters. The leading roles are played by Juan Daniel Garcia Treviño and Xueming Angelina Chen.
