Halle Berry Used to Sleep in a Homeless Shelter

Halle Berry grew up surrounded by violence and watched her father push her mother down the stairs. She couldn’t escape it, even when she went to school. There she witnessed frequent flights between her peers.

Finally, her mother found the strength to leave her husband and put her daughter Halle in a better school. Although it was safer, Halle still felt alone. Fellow students teased her and called her “Oreo” because she was biracial.

And Halle grew tired of feeling “less than.” Being bullied only fueled her desire to prove herself. You can win big, but you can also lose big. You have to be willing to take those risks.

She moved to New York City, but soon her savings ran out, and her own mother denied her requests for help, forcing her to live in a homeless shelter. Halle was angry at the time but later admitted her mother’s actions made her find her strength.

During filming for Living Dolls, Halle suddenly passed out and lapsed into a 7 day-long coma. She was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes but was determined not to let her medical issues hold her back.

While her acting career took off, her love life was a different story. Halle found herself in an abusive relationship, just like her mother, and lost most of the hearing in her left ear as the result of a blow from a boyfriend that punctured her eardrum.

Instead of despairing, she found the lesson in the experience.

She admits she was looking for her knight in shining armor and accumulated 3 failed marriages along the way. Halle realized if she wanted to be saved, she had to do it herself, and soon used her newfound strength to help others. She volunteers to help families affected by violence, giving women and children the life she wished she had growing up. Halle spent most of her feeling unworthy, before becoming a hero to others, and more importantly, to herself.

“I wanna thank my mom, who’s given me the strength to fight every single day to be who I wanna be, and who gave me the courage… to dream that this dream might be happening and possible for me. I love you mom, so much . Thank you” I take care of myself because I learned early on that I am the only person in life who’s responsible for me.”
