Comedies You Probably Never Heard Of But You Must See

It’s Friday night, and all you want is to stay in after a long week and chill. We’ve all been there, and we know that trying to find a movie to watch can be pretty frustrating. If you think you’ve already watched every worthwhile comedy we might have to stop you right there with our list of the best comedies you haven’t seen. Ready? Let’s dive in!

1. Car Wash (1976)

This is a feel-good day-in-life comedy, the kind of a movie you’d enjoy watching on a Friday night with your friends. And it probably is one of the best unknown comedies that deserves more appreciation than it has been given. The plot of this cult comedy is pretty simple. It is centered around a day in a life of the Los Angeles car wash with all its politically incorrect jokes, eccentric customers, and funky music.

2. The World According to Garp (1982)

To start with, this movie is based on the book, but it doesn’t follow its plot from cover to cover. So if you’re the type of person who likes to read the book first and then evaluate the director’s execution, we’d rather you didn’t this time. This comedy is a great stand-alone timeless piece that will get to your heart and entertain you at the same time. The movie with magnificent Robbin Williams tells a story of Garp, the fiction writer who has uneasy time coping with the commercial success of his mother’s feminist-themed non-fiction. This film is pure magic. Highly recommended.

3. Death Becomes Her (1992)

This is a not-so-comedy slash horror slash fantasy, but it certainly is funny at times and pretty entertaining overall. Death Becomes Her is the kind of movie that requires you to prepare a little to decompose all the meaning and context behind what you see. The movie is about two female rivals (Meryl Strip and Goldie Hawn) who drink a magical potion hoping to stay forever young, but things don’t go quite as planned. In a broader sense, this movie is about causes and consequences for female vanity. You will enjoy this comedy if you like unconventional humor with lots of plot twists.

4. The Trotsky (2009)

This movie has a teenage comedy feel and appeal, but it’s not really what you think it is. It’s even better if you watch it when you’re no longer in your teens because you’ll get to understand all the jokes, which at times are hilarious. This comedy is about a Montreal student who is not your regular high school kid. He believes he is the reincarnation of Leon Trotsky and decides to starts a revolution against post-modernist apathy. There are lots of references to Bolshevist history and Marxism, which is also quite interesting. Overall, this is a great time waster worth checking out.

5. Vincent (2014)

This is a nice comedy that has some realistic moments to it but in the end, it still is rather predictable. It tells a story of an unusual (is it though when we’re talking about a movie?) friendship between a young boy whose parents have just divorced and a hedonistic and misanthropic war veteran living next door. Despite all the mixed reviews, this is one of the best comedies you haven’t seen at least because of the cast. Bill Murray presence makes every movie worthwhile. The plot might prompt you to register on DoULike or go out and meet somebody because being single with a kid is no fun.

6. The Wackness (2008)

If you have seen ‘Juno’ and enjoyed it, ‘The Wackness’ is your kind of movie. This effortless and well-paced story about coming of age is filled with every imaginable element of teenage comedy slash drama. The setting is New York, summer 1994. A lonely teenager named Luke makes his way through an uneasy transitioning between high school and college, having to deal with peer pressure, love, and family issues. Just to give you a glimpse of how weird the things are getting here, this boy is selling drugs to his psychiatrist in exchange to counseling, while having a crush on his stepdaughter. Oh, and the soundtracks in the movie are on point.

We wanted to include a variety of choices on our list because everyone loves different things. So we hope you have found something interesting too. Have a good time!
